Privacy Policy
Last updated October 31, 2026 (saved phrases added)
Say Like a Local (saylikealocal.com) shows natural ways to say things in other languages, with audio. You can use it without an account. This page says what we collect, why, and what you can ask us to do with it.
What we collect
- What you type into the box. We keep each question and its answer so the next person who asks gets it instantly. We may publish answers as pages on this site. They are not linked to you, so do not type personal information into the box.
- Your account, if you sign in. Signing in with Google gives us your name, email address and the address of your Google profile picture. Signing in with a password stores your email or username and a one-way hash of the password, never the password itself.
- Your saved phrases and history, if you sign in. We keep the phrases you save and the ones you open while signed in, so you can come back to them. Only you can see them.
- Sign-in records. When someone signs in or signs up, we record the time, the result, the IP address, the browser's user agent and the approximate region the IP address is in, to spot abuse.
- Your IP address, briefly. To stop one person using up the service, we count requests per IP address in memory. The counts are not stored and disappear within an hour.
- How the site is used. We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read: the pages you view, roughly where you are (country and city, from your IP address), your device and browser, and how you arrived. It uses cookies to tell one visit from another. It does not tell us who you are.
- Server logs. Our web server keeps standard request logs (address, page, time, browser) for a limited time, to keep the site running and secure.
What we do not collect
- Your voice. When you use "Say it" to record yourself, the recording stays in your browser and is never sent to us.
- Advertising cookies. We do not use any. Besides Google Analytics's cookies, we use one cookie to keep you signed in, and a short-lived one while you sign in with Google, to make sure the sign-in you finish is the one you started.
Who else handles it
- An AI model provider receives the text of a new question in order to write the answer.
- Microsoft's speech service receives the sentences of an answer to produce the audio. It receives no information about you.
- Google handles signing in with Google, under Google's own privacy policy.
- Cloudflare carries all traffic to this site, to deliver it and protect it from attacks.
- Google Analytics receives the usage information above, under Google's own privacy policy. You can block it with Google's opt-out browser add-on or any content blocker.
We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with anyone else unless the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Your account stays until you ask us to delete it. Sign-in records and server logs are kept only as long as they are useful for security. Questions and answers are kept as part of the site.
Your choices
You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about your account, to correct it, or to delete your account, its saved phrases and history, and its sign-in records. Write to [email protected] from the address on your account.
Children
The site is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information about them.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page.
