How to Say "I Understand" in Chinese
For “I understand” after an explanation, the most common everyday expression is 我明白了 (wǒ míngbai le). For “I understand your situation or feelings,” Chinese more often says 我理解.
The most common way
wǒ míngbai le
I understand / I get it now — a standard, polite acknowledgement that you have understood something.
How to say it: Stress míng with a second tone and say bai and le lightly and short; don't pronounce bai like a full English “bye.”
Other ways to say it
- casual
dǒng le
Got it / I understand — short and conversational.
When to use it: Use it with friends, classmates, or familiar colleagues when someone has just explained something.
- formal
wǒ lǐjiě le
I understand the point or reasoning — more formal and reflective than 明白了.
When to use it: Use it in formal discussions or when responding to an elder or senior colleague after an explanation.
- empathetic
wǒ lǐjiě
I understand how you feel or your situation — sympathetic rather than just factual.
When to use it: Use it when someone shares a difficulty or feeling and you want to show sympathy and understanding.
- professional
shōudào
Received / noted / got it — a quick confirmation that you have received and understood a message.
When to use it: Use it in work chats or email replies to colleagues and clients when confirming instructions.
- slightly abrupt
wǒ zhīdào le
I know / I've got it — acknowledges information but can sound impatient if said flatly.
When to use it: Use it with people you know well, or when you want to signal “message received” without much warmth.

Common mistakes
我同意→ 我明白了同意 means “I agree,” not “I understand”; it only fits when you accept an opinion.
我知道→ 我明白了When someone is explaining something new, 我知道 can sound like “I already know,” so 我明白了 is more polite.
